Fini My Octopi Gluten Free Sweets

Fini My Octopi Gluten Free

There's a lot of companies making gluten free goodies nowadays, from the likes of Gullon and Fox's, but I've never tried Fini before. They're an Italian company available in some discount stores like Poundland and Bargain Buys, as well as discount sections in larger Tesco stores. I always assumed most jelly sweets were gluten free, but some can contain glucose syrup derived from wheat, so if you're very sensitive you may have problems with it. Personally, I've noticed I do indeed have issues with glucose syrup in some sweets, so it's reassuring to know there's specialist gluten free sweets out there.

Fini My Octopi Gluten Free

These My Octopi sweets from Fini struck me because they're quite unique and fun for jelly sweets...I've never seen sweets in these fun octopus shapes before!

Fini My Octopi Gluten Free

For Octopi they're pretty cute, don't ya think?!

How did they taste? Well, very nice as it happens, the quality is on par with Haribo and they were super fruity, chewy and with some good range of flavours. It was fun picking apart the little legs as I ate them (sorry!).

Overall, for sweets that are gluten free these are perfect: fun, tasty, chewy and just as good as the leading brand. If you are super sensitive to gluten keep your peepers open for these in discount stores like Poundland!

The Primal Pantry Mixed Berries Paleo Protein Bar

The Primal Pantry Mixed Berries Paleo Protein Bar

The primal pantry have unleashed another Paleo and Vegan approved bar on the snacking market...this time with the addition of some plant protein in the mix. I spotted this bar looking for a "healthy" snack in Tesco Express and found it in the Free From section. It cost just over £2 which ain't cheap for a small bar...so is it worth it?

Thankfully it is. If you like Nakd bars or other similar healthier snacks bars you'll probably love this. It contains hemp protein, as well as coconut nectar as the sweetener (probably why these cost so much), goji berries, almonds, pumpkin seeds, raspberry, dates and apricots. There's 12g protein per 55g bar.

So how does it taste? Well it's actually quite yummy for a healthy snack bar! Usually my complaint with bars like his is that they're too sticky and based on dried fruit, but this has the right balance of seeds and nuts to sweeteness...the hemp protein gives it a slightly more substantial texture and is actually filling, compared to a regular fruit and nut bar. The pumpkin seeds add a nice bit of crunch and the berries bring some nice fruity bursts to keep things interesting.

The Primal Pantry Mixed Berries Paleo Protein Bar

Overall, I am pleasantly surprised by this bar...I'm not usually one to bother with protein bars, but this one doesn't taste like any regular protein bar, rather it tastes like a real food bar. I would buy one again, despite the high price point.

Nestle Kitkat Chunky New York Cheesecake Review

Nestle Kitkat Chunky New York Cheesecake

Today's review isn't something I would usually feature, since it contains gluten. However on this occasion I decided to test this new Kitkat Chunky variety on friends and see what they thought of it. I was offered some of these to review and I can't turn down free samples!

New York Cheesecake is an unusual flavour indeed for Kitkat, so how have they recreated the classic biscuit and cream cheese dessert? By putting the cream cheese as a layer over the wafer of course! Described as a "crispy wafer finger with a New York cheesecake flavour topping covered with milk chocolate", these are available in all supermarkets now in 42g bars for 60p or so.

The bar is the classic Chunky design split into three sections.

The cream sits nicely above the wafer, and breaking the bar apart it certainly has that familiar malty Kitkat chocolate aroma, with a faint smell of cream cheese.

Nestle Kitkat Chunky New York Cheesecake

My friends commented that this tastes like the classic Kitkat Chunky with a creamy sweet edge that could get sickly if you eat too much. It doesn't taste strongly like cheesecake but it does have a slight tang to it. It's very rich and indulgent and tastes like a real treat.

Well - there you have it! There's not much I can personally say about this bar without risking death so I'll trust my friends opinions on this. Everyone enjoyed it and felt it was worth a try.

Now, while I'm at it does anyone remember the epic Tiramisu Kitkat Editions from years back? They were seriously, seriously good!

Marks & Spencer Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter & Caramel Chunkies

Marks & Spencer Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter & Caramel Chunkies

You can't beat M&S for peanutty treats. Yes they do get some of their confectionery range wrong but when they get it right, they get it oh so right...the Nutty Surprise Easter Egg was glorious, for example. Now they've only gone and created some delicious peanutty caramel chocolate treats in their bagged range, which judging by the amount of times are out of stock must be selling like hot cakes! I had put off trying these for ages, firstly due to my low sugar diet over Summer and secondly as I prefer to avoid dairy. But recently I thought what the heck, why not try them!

Described as "milk and dark chocolate bars with a layer of soft caramel (19%) and a peanut butter (11%) and roasted peanut pieces (9%) centre", these are certainly not for anyone with nut allergies! They cost £2 for a 130g bag and are suitable for vegetarians.

Marks & Spencer Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter & Caramel Chunkies

I ate these whilst on the go, as I often do. The bars are quite chunky, which certainly makes for a more satisfying eat.

Marks & Spencer Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter & Caramel Chunkies

Biting into one, they're very substantial indeed. First you get the creamy milk chocolate followed by a layer of dark chocolate, which gives the shell a cracking texture. Then there's the caramel, it's sweet and buttery and very lovely, although the flavour does get a bit lost combined with the peanut centre. The peanut centre is where all the action is - it's creamy, savoury, sweet and nutty all at once, and feels rather indulgent indeed. The flavour isn't quite on par with a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup but it's pretty close! I think if they'd added even more roasted peanut pieces they'd be onto a winner with these...and why not throw some chopped peanuts into the coating while they're at it?! (like a Peanut Ferrero Rocher - yum!)

Overall, these are some seriously tasty treats from M&S, far surpassing anything else in their bagged range. If you buy only one thing from there (and aren't allergic to nuts, of course) it should be these!

Ingredients: Sugar, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, chopped roasted peanuts, dried whole milk, roasted peanuts, glucose syrup, sweetened condensed milk (whole milk, sugar), palm oil, ground roasted peanuts, golden syrup (invert sugar syrup), salt, shea oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, emulsifier soya lecithin, E471, caramelised sugar syrup, flavourings (milk).

Rolo Dark Chocolate Dessert (Limited Edition) Review

I recently spotted these Rolo Dark Desserts in a discount store and couldn't resist giving them a try. I've already reviewed the regular Dark Chocolate Rolo's and wondered how it would translate into dessert form...

They're described as "A layered dark chocolate and toffee dessert" and contain 4 small pots per pack.

Unfortunately I think I must have got a bad batch. The dessert had a rather unpleasant gelatinous texture, and the dark chocolate and toffee flavours didn't distract much from this. The toffee layer tasted pleasant enough though, with the dark chocolate layer adding a richer flavour to balance out the sweetness.

Overall though, I wasn't a fan of these desserts, the texture is too off-putting. I think I'll stick with the Milkybar variety!

RATING: 6.5 out of 10.

Allergens: Milk, soya.

Not suitable for vegetarians.

Perfect World Sweet Espresso Ice Cream

Perfect World Sweet Espresso Ice Cream

Another ice cream review today, and this time it's for Perfect World's new Sweet Espresso variety, which is part of their newly revamped range alongside the existing Caramel and Pecan, the new Raspberry Ripple, Pistachio, Mint Choc Chip and Double Choc Chip. All of Perfect World's ice creams are suitable for vegans, gluten and dairy free and sugar free. They're made with a blend of xylitol, stevia and erythritol and contain coconut milk plus nut paste. The range is available from www.ocado.com and some Tesco's (if it isn't stocked locally please do request they sell it).

Perfect World Sweet Espresso Ice Cream

As well as being free from most allergens this ice cream is also high in 12 vitamins and minerals, and contains only 4.1g natural sugars and 396 calories per tub. Pretty healthy! It's described as a "non dairy coffee flavoured ice cream with espresso concentrate and sweeteners".

Perfect World Sweet Espresso Ice Cream

Coffee ice cream can be a bit hit and miss I find, in that it's usually too weak in flavour but that certainly wasn't the case here! The flavour is strong and potent and tastes exactly like a sweet espresso. The texture of the ice cream is kind of like a gelato or sorbet, creamy and melt in the mouth but not too heavy. It's pleasant and works well for a coffee ice cream.

Overall, this is another tasty and healthy treat from Perfect World, perfect for vegans or anyone avoiding the sugar, plus it gives you a nice little coffee hit to boot. Recommended!

Perfect World Pistachio Ice Cream

Perfect World Pistachio Ice Cream

Following my reviews of Perfect World Caramel and Pecan and Raspberry Ripple Ice Creams today's is another from their newly revamped vegan, sugar free and gluten free range in a rather delicious flavour indeed...Pistachio! Containing only 5.2g of natural sugars and 390 calories per tub this also boasts 12 vitamins and minerals too. Not bad for an indulgent treat!

Perfect World Pistachio Ice Cream

The ice cream is made with a blend of coconut milk, almond, cashew and pistachio nut paste as well as the sweeteners xylitol, erythritol and stevia. Opening the lid, it had a lovely green hue and inviting pistachio aroma. There's little pistachio pieces mixed into the ice cream.

Perfect World Pistachio Ice Cream

Taste wise it was lovely, a super creamy and inviting pistachio flavour that melted in the mouth beautifully. The crunchy pieces add a nice bit of bite without it being too much. This is most definitely one for pistachio lovers, it's so nutty and moreish! I liked the fact that it's not sickly sweet like some dairy-based ice creams can be.

Overall, this is yet another win from Perfect World, proving that you really don't need dairy or sugar to make a nice icy treat. If you're vegan or avoiding sugar these are a must try...keep an eye out for them on Ocado.com and in Tesco stores! The more requests they get the more likely they are to stock them locally :)
